This January, join our colleagues from the University of Westminster, University of Kwazulu-Natal (Durban) and University College London to hear the findings from ISULabaNtu – a four-year, Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded project, under the Newton Fund Urban Transformations Programme. E Co. has been involved in the project since 2016, advising on the development of the collaborative toolkit, disseminating the findings of the research and offering ad hoc project support.
Why attend this event?
The event is ‘to communicate and disseminate the project findings in a practical manner to members of academia, policy makers, practitioners, local governments, community organisations and any other third-sector organisation interested in the future of self-reliance in the informal settlement upgrading space.’ Lunch and refreshments will be provided, plus a drinks reception at the end of the day. What is ISULabaNtu?
The project was undertaken to co-produce knowledge with local communities through participatory action research methods and develop a set of integrated environmental and construction management resources and practical guidelines to enhance self-organisation practices in informal settlements in Durban, South Africa. The project was implemented in five phases: 1) Defining barriers and drivers of in-situ participatory approaches for informal settlement upgrading; 2) Mapping urban transitions through community participation; 3) Promoting integrated closed loop environmental management systems; 4) Project management and skills enhancement in construction; 5) Developing and testing the collaborative integrated toolkit.
