Question: Can you describe the project formulation process?
One of the key rules for project formulation at E Co. is that the process should be ‘expert informed’ not ‘expert led’.
Our role is to develop a project that tackles climate challenges, while being sensitive to the local context and responsive to donor requirements. That means we have to ask a lot of questions and do a lot of listening.
We’ll usually start by exploring the nature of the climate challenge the project is supposed to tackle and the barriers the project will overcome. In addition to making sure these are clear and compelling, we want to ensure there is a good fit with the donor’s priorities, and also with the resources and capabilities of the project sponsor.
Next, we’ll work with the project sponsor and other stakeholders to define the project’s overall approach to overcoming those barriers, and convert that into donor-friendly language.
Once everyone is satisfied with the overall project structure, we prepare the detailed project documents, and refine those iteratively with the project sponsor until the proposal is ready for submission to the donor.
