Watch our bite-sized and easily digestible video series, sharing our insights and experiences of designing low-carbon, climate-resilient development projects, across the globe. We discuss the who, where, what, why and hows behind successfully obtaining funding from major donors, including the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Question: Tell us about a project you have worked on this year.

In the past months I have been involved in projects that focus on displaced populations. For example, I have been recently working on a feasibility study for a GCF Funding Proposal. The project aims at increasing the resilience of populations affected by displacement, who are also extremely vulnerable to climate change.

This project is a pioneering example of looking at solutions for refugees and host communities in a holistic and interconnected way. In fact, the solutions involved participatory land use planning, as well as forestry, agriculture and livelihoods interventions that benefit both communities. The most interesting aspect of this project for me was the need to design solutions that would restore degraded ecosystems, improve livelihoods of both populations, and at the same time, offer opportunities for alleviating conflicts over shared natural resources.

While the preparation of the feasibility study has been challenging in some cases, especially in relation to the availability of local data and the complexity of the project, this project has provided me the opportunity to engage with both refugee and host communities and to get their views on project design and preferred solutions. At E Co. we put an emphasis on participatory processes that capture the voices of all stakeholders involved, from executing entities, to implementation partners but most importantly the voices of beneficiaries themselves.
