Jamal Gore

In a nutshell, tell us about yourself.

I started my career researching small hydropower project development in Nepal.  Later, I found myself managing a series of gender, agriculture and energy initiatives in Kenya. Ten years ago, I was financing a Gold Standard GHG emission reduction project in Sudan. More recently, I put PV panels on my roof, got an electric car, installed LED lights and – best of all – joined E Co.

What drives you to do this kind of work?

My children will face a warmer, more volatile world, and those impacts will depend on our actions today. I want to have a good answer when they ask about my role.

What are you most proud of?

My kids, who are doing far more than I ever did at their age.

What are your loves?

Good music and good coffee.  And my wife, of course.

What are your hates?

Climate change denial and inefficient airport security.

What’s the best thing about your job?

My job gives me the opportunity to work on interesting topics with engaging and inspiring people around the world. Who wouldn’t enjoy that?

Which book has changed your life?

‘Foundation’, by Issac Asimov. As a kid, I was captivated by the book’s theme of looking at where civilisation is heading and making a conscious decision to change course.
